10. EWALD LIENEN
This one is just horror movie gruesome. On August 14, 1981, Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Ewald Lienen’s thigh was ripped open by the studs of another player, exposing bone and tissue. Horrified by the sight of his own leg, Ewald managed to get up and run off the field. Today he manages TSV 1860 München.

9. BORJE SALMING
On November 26, 1986 during a game against the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Borje Salming was knocked down during a scramble and Wings forward Gerard Gallant accidentally stepped on Salming’s face. The gash ran from forehead to chin and required 250 stitches.

8. NAPOLEON MCCALLUM
The career of Los Angeles Raiders running back Napoleon McCallum came to an abrupt end on opening game of the season, September 5, 1994, when McCallum’s cleat got stuck in the ground and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ken Norton Jr spiraled him to the ground, getting pinned underneath him. McCallum’s left knee was hyper-extended 90 degrees, tearing 3 ligaments, the hamstring and calf from the bone.

7. KEVIN STEVENS
On May 14, 1993, Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Kevin Stevens shattered his face on the ice. Playing against the New York Islanders in game 7 of the Patrick Division Finals, Stevens had a collision with the visor of Islanders defenseman Rich Pilon in a check attempt. Pilon flew into the boards and Stevens, knocked out cold, fell with the full weight of his body straight onto his face. Surgeons had to literally peel back his entire face to perform reconstructive surgery. He went on to play another 8 seasons with the Bruins, Kings, Rangers and Flyers, retiring in 2001.

6. DAVID BUSST
During a career-ending match against Manchester United on April 8, 1996, Coventry defender David Busst collided with Denis Irwin and Brian McClair causing multiple compound fractures of the tibia and fibula in his right leg. It’s been reported that United’s goalie Peter Schmeichel threw up at the sight of the injury as you can see from the footage. While in the hospital, Busst’s injuries were greatly complicated from contracting the staff infection known as MRSA which can turn into a deadly flesh-eating nightmare. At one point it looked as though his leg might have to be amputated. Luckily that did not happen.

5. JOE THEISMANN
It was November 18, 1985 when Washington Redskins starting quarterback Joe Theismann was sacked by New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor and suffered a grisly compound fracture that pretty much pulverized his right leg. The leg was so badly shattered between the knee and ankle that his lower leg from mid-shin downward lay on the ground while the knee remained bent at a 45-degree angle.

4. DJIBRIL CISSE
This one’s not pretty, kids. French footballer Djibril Cisse had his lower leg twisted and crumpled up like a wet dishrag. On October 30, 2004, while playing for Liverpool against the Blackburn Rovers, Cisse was tackled by Jay McEveley. His left tibia and fibula broke and his lower leg was contorted as his foot remained planted on the ground. He had pins put in the leg and miraculously returned to playing before the season was over.

3. WILLIS MCGAHEE
During the 2003 Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game playing for the University of Miami, McGahee was hit by Ohio State Buckeye safety Will Allen. His left knee was bent backward, tearing his anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, and medial collateral ligament. After extensive physical therapy and multiple surgeries, McGahee opted to not collect on a $2.5 million insurance policy in favor of entering the 2003 NFL Draft. He went on to play for the Buffalo Bills in 2004 and then the Baltimore Ravens from 2007 to this day.

2. TIM KRUMRIE
During Super Bowl XXIII against the San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals nose tackle Tim Krumrie suffered 2 breaks to his tibia and 1 to his fibula. Refusing to go to the hospital, he remained in the locker room watching the game on TV until paramedics forced him to go. We imagine the endorphins had taken over. Krumrie’s leg was outfitted with a 15-inch steel rod and he played 6 more seasons. Apparently the injury that Krumrie suffered was so grotesque, the NFL has managed to wipe all traces of it from the internet. We imagine it looked something like this:

1. CLINT MALARCHUK
No one will ever forget the gory scene on the ice with Buffalo Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk. Especially if you happened to be there. On March 22, 1989, fans and players watched in horror as a pool of blood came spilling out onto the ice when the skate of St. Louis player Steve Tuttle accidentally sliced Malrchuk’s anterior carotid artery. Malarchuk remained calm, applying pressure to his own neck, yet thinking he would be dead within minutes, as the Sabres training staff rushed onto the ice.
